Authorized Center Necropsy

Authorized Center Necropsy is a regulated postmortem examination of an animal performed at an approved facility to determine cause of death and document conditions affecting wildlife or environmental health. Trained personnel conduct external and internal examinations, collect tissues and other samples, and may use histopathology, toxicology, or microbiology to identify disease, injury, contaminants, or nutritional problems while maintaining biosafety and chain-of-custody procedures. In environmental research, these findings help investigate unusual mortality events, detect pollution or emerging pathogens, evaluate ecosystem stress, and support wildlife management, public health decisions, and legally defensible conservation actions.

University of Notre Dame, IN Many animal experiments rely on final data collection time points that are gathered from the harvesting and testing of organs and tissues. The use of appropriate methods for the collection of organs and tissues can impact the quality of the samples and the analysis of the data that is gleaned for the testing of the tissues. The method of euthanasia of the animal can also impact the quality of...

The health of wild fishes can be used as an indicator of aquatic ecosystem health. Necropsy-based fish health assessments provide documentation of visible lesions or abnormalities, data used to calculate condition indices as well as the opportunity to collect tissues for microscopic evaluation, gene expression and other more in-depth analyses.
