Dissecting Microscope Setup

Dissecting microscope setup is the process of configuring a stereomicroscope to view and manipulate relatively large, three-dimensional specimens at low magnification, making it useful for environmental observation and analysis. The instrument uses separate optical paths to provide a stereoscopic image, while reflected or transmitted illumination, adjustable magnification, focus, and working distance help reveal surface features and specimen structure. Proper setup supports examination of insects, plant material, soil particles, aquatic organisms, and other environmental samples without extensive preparation. Consistent lighting and stable positioning improve image quality, reduce observation errors, and enable accurate documentation of morphology, damage, contamination, and ecological interactions.

A fast and inexpensive method for the behavioral determination of hearing parameters like hearing thresholds, hearing impairments or phantom perceptions (subjective tinnitus) is described. It uses pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response and can be easily implemented in a personal computer using a programmable AD/DA-converter and a piezo sensor.

Multiplexed ion beam imaging (MIBI) is often used to image tissue microarrays and tiled, contiguous tissue areas, but current software for setting up these experiments is cumbersome. The tile/SED/array interface is an intuitive, interactive graphical tool developed to dramatically simplify and accelerate MIBI run setup.
