Fertilizer Spike Application

Fertilizer spike application is a method of delivering plant nutrients through solid, compressed fertilizer units placed directly into soil, typically near a plant’s root zone. Soil moisture gradually dissolves the spike, allowing nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to move into the surrounding soil for root uptake over time. This targeted approach can simplify nutrient management and reduce fertilizer spread across uncovered surfaces compared with broadcast application, although placement, dosage, soil conditions, and plant requirements determine its effectiveness. In environmental research and practice, fertilizer spikes help evaluate nutrient-use efficiency while highlighting the need to prevent excess nutrients from entering waterways.

Fertilization

During fertilization, an egg and sperm cell fuse to create a new diploid structure. In humans, the process occurs once the egg has been released from the ovary, and travels into the fallopian tubes. The process requires several key steps: 1) sperm present in the genital tract must locate the egg; 2) once there, sperm need to release enzymes to help them burrow through the protective zona pellucida of the egg; and 3) the membranes of a single sperm cell and egg must fuse, with the sperm...

The zebrafish is a powerful model system for developmental biology and human disease research due to their genetic similarity with higher vertebrates. This protocol describes a methodology to create haploid zebrafish embryos that can be utilized for forward screen strategies to identify recessive mutations in genes essential for early embryogenesis.

Source: Tran, B. N., et. al. High-throughput Confocal Imaging of Quantum Dot-Conjugated SARS-CoV-2 Spike Trimers to Track Binding and Endocytosis in HEK293T Cells. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)This video demonstrates the use of quantum dot–conjugated spike protein (QD-Spike) to visualize dose-dependent viral entry in ACE2-GFP–expressing cells. Confocal imaging captures the internalization of QD-Spike via receptor-mediated endocytosis, modeling early coronavirus entry.
