Pretreatment Program

A Pretreatment Program is a regulatory framework that controls industrial wastewater before it enters a publicly owned treatment works (POTW), protecting treatment processes, workers, receiving waters, and biosolids quality. It works by establishing discharge standards and local limits, issuing permits, and using monitoring, sampling, inspections, and enforcement to prevent pollutants from causing interference or passing through the treatment plant. In environmental management, these programs address metals, toxic chemicals, corrosive wastes, and other industrial contaminants at their source. Effective pretreatment reduces treatment failures, supports regulatory compliance, improves wastewater treatment performance, and helps safeguard public and environmental health.

2016

The pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass with protic low-cost ionic liquids is shown, resulting in a delignified cellulose-rich pulp and a purified lignin. The pulp gives rise to high glucose yields after enzymatic saccharification.

Handheld Device for Saliva Pretreatment to Improve Cortisol Detection

2026

This protocol describes a rapid saliva pretreatment method for improving cortisol detection. A handheld filtration device is used to remove mucins and other interfering substances while preserving the target analyte. The pretreated saliva exhibits improved capillary flow, thereby enabling more consistent and reproducible assay performance.

Programmed electrical stimulation provides the ability to determine conduction properties of the heart, and the possibility to induce and terminate cardiac arrhythmias using various pacing protocols. Using a transvenous catheter, intracardiac electrogram recordings can be obtained in mice following programmed electrical stimulation protocols to identify arrhythmogenic substrates.

2020

Ammonia fiber expansion (AFEX) is a thermochemical pretreatment technology that can convert lignocellulosic biomass (e.g., corn stover, rice straw, and sugarcane bagasse) into a highly digestible feedstock for both biofuels and animal feed applications. Here, we describe a laboratory-scale method for conducting AFEX pretreatment on lignocellulosic biomass.
