Setaria Viridis

Setaria viridis, or green foxtail, is a small C4 grass and an important model for studying plant biology, ecology, and environmental responses. Its compact genome, rapid life cycle, efficient genetic transformation, and tolerance of diverse growth conditions allow researchers to examine how grasses regulate photosynthesis, development, and responses to drought, heat, and nutrient availability. Because it is closely related to major cereal crops, findings from S. viridis can inform research on crop resilience, climate adaptation, and sustainable agriculture. The species also supports comparative studies of C4 metabolism and plant interactions with changing environments.

We have developed a methodology for performing crosses in Setaria viridis (S. viridis). The method involves pruning the panicle prior to a hot water treatment to kill viable pollen. Crosses are performed following a well-controlled growth regime and typically result in the recovery of 1 to 7 cross-pollinated seed/s per panicle.
