Species-specific Survey Area

Species-specific survey area is a spatial boundary defined to assess the presence, distribution, abundance, or habitat use of a particular species in an environmental study. Its design reflects the species’ ecological requirements, movement patterns, habitat associations, and likelihood of detection, allowing researchers to select appropriate locations, sampling effort, and survey methods. By matching the survey footprint to the target organism rather than using a uniform area, this approach can improve data quality and support biodiversity monitoring, environmental impact assessment, habitat management, and conservation planning. Results help identify important habitat, track population change, and evaluate potential effects of environmental disturbance.

Tree Survey: Point-Centered Quarter Sampling Method

2023

A number of methods are available for sampling forest communities. Point-centered quarter is one such method. It is used to gather information on the density, frequency, and coverage of tree species found in a forest. This information provides the ability to estimate the number of individual trees encountered, how often a certain tree occurs, how common the tree is compared to other trees, and the size of the tree. Compared to the standard plot analysis, the point-centered quarter method is...

Surveys

Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people. Surveys allow researchers to gather data from larger samples than may be afforded by...

Environmental DNA assays require rigorous design, testing, optimization and validation before the collection of field data can begin. Here, we present a protocol to take users through each step of designing a species-specific, probe-based qPCR assay for the detection and quantification of a target species DNA from environmental samples.

Detection and isolation of clinically relevant Vibrio species require selective and differential culture media. This study evaluated the ability of a new chromogenic medium to detect and identify V. parahaemolyticus and other related species. The new medium was found to have better sensitivity and specificity than the conventional medium.
