Felsic Mafic Composition

Felsic-mafic composition describes the chemical and mineral makeup of igneous rocks and magmas, especially their relative silica content, color, and density. Felsic materials contain more silica and commonly form from lighter minerals such as quartz and feldspar, whereas mafic materials contain more iron and magnesium and crystallize primarily as minerals such as pyroxene and olivine; these differences develop as magma cools and minerals crystallize at different temperatures. Understanding felsic and mafic composition helps scientists classify rocks, interpret volcanic and tectonic settings, assess weathering and soil development, and evaluate how geological materials influence landscapes, nutrient cycling, and environmental conditions.

Igneous Intrusive Rock

2023

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder Igneous rocks are products of the cooling and crystallization of high temperature liquid rock, called magma. Magmatic temperatures typically range from approximately 800 °C to 1,200 °C. Molten rock is, perhaps luckily for humans, an anomaly on planet Earth. If a random and imaginary drill hole were made in the Earth, it would most likely not reach a region of truly and totally molten material until the outer core, at nearly...

Classifying Matter by Composition

2020

Matter: Pure Substances and Mixtures According to its composition, the matter can be classified into two broad categories — pure substances and mixtures. A pure substance is a form of matter that has a constant composition throughout with uniform properties. For example, any sample of sucrose has the same composition and same physical properties, such as melting point, color, and sweetness, regardless of the source from which it is isolated. A mixture is composed of two or more types of...

2016

A straightforward procedure for ultrasonic welding of thermoplastic composite coupons for basic mechanical testing is described. Key characteristics of this ultrasonic welding process are the use of flat energy directors for simplified process preparation and the use of process data for the fast definition of optimum processing conditions.

Igneous Volcanic Rock

2023

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder Igneous rocks are the products of cooling and crystallization of magma. Volcanic rocks are a particular variety of igneous rock, forming as a consequence of magma breaching the surface, then cooling and crystallizing in the subaerial environment. Magma is molten rock that typically ranges in temperature from approximately 800 °C to 1,200 °C (Figure 1). Magma itself is produced within the Earth via three primary melting...

Experimental Implementation of a New Composite Fabrication Method: Exposing Bare Fibers on the Composite Surface by the Soft Layer Method

2017

A protocol to expose bare fibers on the composite surface by eliminating resin rich area is presented. The fibers are exposed during fabrication of the composites, not by the post surface treatment. The exposed carbon composites exhibit high electrical conductivity in the through-thickness direction and high mechanical property.
