Field Capacity

Field capacity is the amount of water a soil retains after excess gravitational water has drained, making it a key measure of soil moisture storage and plant water availability. It develops as large, well-connected pores empty under gravity while smaller pores hold water through capillary and matric forces; the resulting balance depends on soil texture, structure, and drainage conditions. In environmental sciences, field capacity supports estimates of plant-available water, irrigation requirements, groundwater recharge, and watershed water balance. Measuring or modeling it helps researchers evaluate soil health, predict drought stress, and understand how water moves through terrestrial ecosystems.

Lung Capacity

The air in the lungs is measured in volumes and capacities. Lung volume measures reflect the amount of air taken in, released, or left over after a lung function, like a single inhalation. Lung capacity measures are sums of two or more lung volume measures. There are four defined lung volume measures: tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, expiratory reserve volume, and residual volume. Tidal volume is the amount of air inhaled and exhaled in a normal breath. Inspiratory...

Respiratory Capacities

Respiratory capacities are crucial indicators of lung function, representing the maximum amount of air an individual's respiratory system can handle during various breathing phases. One key metric is the Inspiratory Capacity (IC), which represents the maximum amount of air that can be inhaled with full effort. IC is calculated by summing the tidal volume and inspiratory reserve volume, typically ranging from 2.4 to 3.6 liters. The Functional Residual Capacity (FRC) represents the air in the...

Organizational capacity refers to the capabilities, skills, resources, and systems that enable the organization to function effectively and achieve its goal achievement. The capabilities stem from the expertise of the staff, the effectiveness of processes, the utilization of technology, financial resources, and the organizational culture. Here are some uses for understanding and developing organizational capacity: Strategic Planning: Knowing an organization's capacity helps set realistic goals...

Determination of the Calcium Retention Capacity of Isolated Mitochondria
