Ozone Measurement

Ozone measurement is the quantitative determination of ozone concentrations in air, water, or other environmental samples, providing essential information about atmospheric chemistry, air quality, and ecosystem health. Many instruments detect ozone through its strong absorption of ultraviolet light near 254 nanometers, applying the Beer–Lambert law to relate measured light attenuation to concentration; other approaches use chemical or electrochemical reactions. Monitoring networks and field sensors track stratospheric ozone depletion, ground-level ozone pollution, and changes associated with weather or emissions. Reliable measurements support pollution assessment, exposure studies, regulatory decisions, and evaluation of strategies to protect both human health and the environment.

Measuring Tropospheric Ozone

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Ozone is a form of elemental oxygen (O3), a molecule of three oxygen atoms bonded in a structure that is highly reactive as an oxidizing agent. Ozone occurs in both the stratosphere and the troposphere levels of the atmosphere. When in the stratosphere (located approximately 10-50 km from the earth’s surface), ozone molecules form to the ozone layer and help prevent harmful UV rays from reaching Earth’s surface. In...

This manuscript describes a protocol for determining whether exposure to ozone, a criteria air pollutant, impairs alveolar macrophage efferocytosis in vivo. This protocol utilizes commonly used reagents and techniques and can be adapted to multiple models of pulmonary injury to determine effects on alveolar macrophage efferocytosis.

This paper describes operation procedures for the Harvard Environmental Chamber (HEC) and related instrumentation for measuring gaseous and particle species. The environmental chamber is used to produce and study secondary organic species produced from the organic precursors, especially related to atmospheric organic particulate matter.
