Category A Pathogens

Category A pathogens are biological agents that pose the highest priority for public health preparedness because they can cause severe disease, high mortality, or widespread disruption. This classification is based on risk criteria including ease of dissemination or transmission, potential for major public health impact, and the need for special preparedness measures. Examples include Bacillus anthracis, variola virus, Yersinia pestis, botulinum toxin, Francisella tularensis, and agents of viral hemorrhagic fevers. In immunology and infection research, studying these pathogens supports development of diagnostics, vaccines, antitoxins, therapeutics, biosafety protocols, and coordinated surveillance systems for rapid outbreak detection and response.

A simple method for the identification of priority bacterial pathogens is to use genetically engineered reporter phage. These reporter phage, which are specific to their particular host species, are capable of rapidly transducing a bioluminescent signal response to host cells. Herein, we describe the use of reporter phage for the detection of Yersinia pestis.

Source: Laboratories of Nicholaus Noles and Judith Danovitch—University of Louisville It might be possible for the human brain to keep track of each individual person, place, or thing encountered, but that would be a very inefficient use of time and cognitive resources. Instead, humans develop categories. Categories are mental representations of real things that can be used for a variety of purposes. For example, individuals can use the perceptual features of animals to place them into a given...

Understanding how services can be categorized is crucial for businesses, as it can help them manage and market their offerings more effectively. Beyond the fundamental distinction between people-based and equipment-based services, which focuses on the delivery method, services are also classified based on how they process people, possessions, or information. This understanding can guide businesses' service design, customer interaction strategies, and resource allocation. For example,...

Equilibrium is a crucial concept in physics, enabling us to understand how forces interact with bodies to produce no or constant motion. In two-dimensional equilibrium, force systems can be classified into different categories based on their characteristics. One of the categories of equilibrium is collinear equilibrium, which involves forces acting along a straight line. This type of equilibrium requires only one force equation in the direction of the forces, as the other equations are...

We describe a novel methodology for creating naturalistic 3-D objects and object categories with precisely defined feature variations. We use simulations of the biological processes of morphogenesis and phylogenesis to create novel, naturalistic virtual 3-D objects and object categories that can then be rendered as visual images or haptic objects.
