Cytoskeletal Protein Interaction

Cytoskeletal protein interaction refers to the selective binding and coordinated activity of proteins that assemble, regulate, or connect actin filaments, microtubules, and intermediate filaments. These interactions occur through domains that recognize structural partners and through regulatory signals, including phosphorylation and GTPase activity, which control filament assembly, stability, and remodeling. In immunology and infection research, cytoskeletal protein interactions drive immune-cell migration, phagocytosis, receptor trafficking, and formation of cellular barriers, while pathogens may redirect them to enter cells or spread between tissues. Studying these mechanisms clarifies host defense, microbial virulence, and potential targets for therapeutic intervention.

Cytoskeletal Proteins in Bacteria

2023

Bacterial cells were initially considered simple, randomly organized structures lacking a cytoskeleton. However, the discovery of cytoskeleton homologs in bacteria led to the change of this opinion. Bacterial cytoskeletal filaments regulate the cell shape, cell polarity, cell division, and partitioning of plasmids during cell division. It was later discovered that bacterial cytoskeletal proteins, mainly actin and tubulin homologs, are diverse compared to their eukaryotic counterparts. On the...

Cytoskeletal Accessory Proteins

2023

The cytoskeleton is an essential cell component that plays several structural and functional roles. However, the filaments that make up the cytoskeleton cannot function independently and depend on the accessory or ancillary proteins to effectively carry out their function. Accessory proteins associate with cytoskeletal filaments and their monomers, aiding filament formation and function. They also help in the cross-communication among cytoskeletal filaments. Cytoskeletal accessory proteins are...

Cytoskeletal Linker Proteins - Plakins

2023

Plakins are large proteins with binding domains for microtubules, microfilaments, intermediate filaments, and membrane-associated protein complexes at cell junctions. Plakin functions are evolutionarily conserved and are primarily involved in organizing the different components of the cytoskeleton by crosslinking them to each other and connecting them to the cell-matrix and cell adhesion complexes. They are also known to interact with signal transducers, serve as scaffolds for signaling...
