Light Organ

A light organ is a specialized bioluminescent structure that houses light-producing microorganisms or cells, providing a natural system for studying host–microbe interactions. In the Hawaiian bobtail squid, the organ is colonized by the bacterium Vibrio fischeri, whose quorum-sensing signals activate luciferase production when the population reaches sufficient density. The squid regulates colonization through mucus, immune recognition, and selective expulsion of bacteria, making the organ a model for innate immunity, microbial symbiosis, and infection biology. Research on light organs reveals how hosts distinguish beneficial microbes from potential pathogens and how bacterial signaling shapes colonization and disease-related outcomes.

The goal of the protocol is to create liquid crystalline polymer films that can mechanically oscillate under continuous light irradiation. We describe in great detail the conception of free-standing films, from the liquid crystal alignment method to the photo-actuation. The experimental protocol applied to prepare this material is broadly applicable.

Light as Energy

2019

The energy required to carry out photosynthesis is light— typically electromagnetic radiation from the sun. The range of all possible wavelengths is known as the electromagnetic spectrum. Photons A photon is a discrete electromagnetic particle or bundle of energy. Photons are characterized by their frequency, wavelength, and amplitude, similar to the properties of a wave. Waves with higher frequencies transmit more energy and have shorter wavelengths than longer wavelengths that transmit less...
