Male Mice Model

A male mice model is an experimental animal system that uses male mice to investigate biological processes, disease mechanisms, or treatment responses under controlled laboratory conditions. In immunology and infection research, investigators expose mice to a pathogen, microbial component, or vaccine and measure responses from innate and adaptive immune cells, cytokines, antibodies, and tissues; sex-associated physiology, including androgen signaling, can also influence these outcomes. Standardized strains, housing, dosing, and sampling help researchers compare infection severity, immune protection, and therapeutic effects. Male mice models support studies of host-pathogen interactions and preclinical evaluation while emphasizing sex as an important variable in experimental design.

Transurethral Catheterization and Bacterial Inoculation to Generate a Urinary Tract Infection Model in Male Mice

2025

This video demonstrates the establishment of uropathogenic Escherichia coli infection in a female mouse bladder through transurethral catheter instillation. The injected bacteria successfully establish a urinary tract infection within the bladder, providing a valuable platform for studying healthcare-associated diseases related to the urinary tract.

Nematodes can be propagated easily in the lab--in part because hermaphrodites can reproduce by self-fertilization. However, genetic crosses and other experiments may require a large number of males. This video describes a method to enrich for male C. elegans.

Urinary Tract Infection in a Small Animal Model: Transurethral Catheterization of Male and Female Mice

The established model of transurethral catheterization of mice allows the study of bladder pathologies, including urinary tract infection, but can only be performed in females. A new model of male transurethral instillation, presented here, will enable research in an area marked by strong clinical and epidemiological differences between the sexes.

Social Defeat Stress Model for Adolescent C57BL/6 Male and Female Mice

We developed an accelerated social defeat stress model for adolescent C57BL/6 mice, which works in both males and females and allows exposure during discrete adolescent periods. Exposure to this model induces social avoidance, but only in a subset of defeated male and female mice.
