Mosquito-borne Viruses

Mosquito-borne viruses are pathogens transmitted primarily through the bites of infected mosquitoes, making them important causes of human and animal disease worldwide. After a mosquito acquires a virus during a blood meal, the pathogen replicates in mosquito tissues, reaches the salivary glands, and can enter a new host during subsequent feeding; infection then activates innate and adaptive immune responses that influence disease severity and protection. Studying these viruses, including dengue, West Nile, Zika, and chikungunya viruses, supports vaccine development, diagnostic testing, vector-control strategies, and outbreak surveillance. Their transmission cycles also provide important models for understanding host-pathogen interactions and emerging infectious disease risk.

Lattice Energy An ionic compound is stable because of the electrostatic attraction between its positive and negative ions. The lattice energy of a compound is a measure of the strength of this attraction. The lattice energy (ΔHlattice) of an ionic compound is defined as the energy required to separate one mole of the solid into its component gaseous ions. Here, the convention is used where the ionic solid is separated into ions, meaning the lattice energies will be endothermic (positive...

Preventing the Spread of Malaria and Dengue Fever Using Genetically Modified Mosquitoes

In this candid interview, Anthony A. James explains how mosquito genetics can be exploited to control malaria and dengue transmission. Population replacement strategy, the idea that transgenic mosquitoes can be released into the wild to control disease transmission, is introduced as well as the concept of genetic drive and the design criterion for an effective genetic drive system. The ethical considerations of releasing genetically-modified organisms into the wild are also discussed.
