Non-invasive Monitoring

Non-invasive monitoring is the measurement of biological, physiological, or molecular changes without surgically accessing tissue or disrupting the body, enabling repeated observation of immune responses and infection. It works by capturing external signals or analyzing accessible outputs, such as medical images, vital signs, exhaled compounds, saliva, or urine, to detect changes associated with pathogen activity or host inflammation. In immunology and infection research, these approaches can track disease progression, evaluate treatment response, identify emerging complications, and reduce the burden of repeated sampling. Their longitudinal data also support earlier intervention and more precise characterization of host-pathogen interactions.

Non-invasive Monitoring and Imaging in Animal Research

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Non-invasive technologies support the principles of 3Rs by enabling repeated data collection from the same animal without the need for euthanasia at multiple time points. These approaches reduce the number of animals required...

Fecal Glucocorticoid Analysis: Non-invasive Adrenal Monitoring in Equids

Cited by 6 •

2016

Adrenal activity can be assessed in the equine species by analysis of feces for corticosterone metabolites. The method offers a non-invasive option to assess long term patterns in both domestic and free ranging horses. This protocol describes the enzyme linked immunoassay involved and the associated biochemical validation.

An in vivo Rodent Model of Contraction-induced Injury and Non-invasive Monitoring of Recovery

2011

An in vivo animal model of injury is described. The method takes advantage of the subcutaneous position of the fibular nerve. Velocity, timing of muscle activation, and arc of motion are all pre-determined and synchronized using commercial software. Post injury changes are monitored in vivo using MR imaging/spectroscopy.

Robotic-Guided Stereoelectroencephalography for Invasive Epilepsy Monitoring

2025

This protocol presents robot-assisted stereo electroencephalography (sEEG), a method for the stereotactic implantation of intracerebral electrodes used for invasive seizure monitoring in patients with refractory epilepsy. Techniques incorporating stereotactic robotic guidance for sEEG are safe and precise and may improve surgical efficiency, especially when implanting greater numbers of electrodes.

Bioluminescent Orthotopic Pancreatic Cancer Mouse Model: A Non-invasive Technique to Monitor Cancer Progression in Mice

2023

This video demonstrates an orthotopic model of pancreatic cancer that utilizes Matrigel for localized cell delivery and in vivo bioluminescence imaging for non-invasive monitoring of tumor progression. The orthotopic model is suited to both syngeneic and xenograft models and could be used in pre-clinical trials to investigate the impact of novel anti-cancer therapeutics on the growth of the primary pancreatic tumor and metastasis.
