Point-of-care Testing

Point-of-care testing is the performance of diagnostic analyses near the patient, rather than exclusively in a centralized laboratory, enabling rapid clinical decisions. In immunology and infection, devices commonly detect microbial antigens, host antibodies, or nucleic acids in samples such as blood, saliva, or swabs through lateral-flow immunoassays, biosensors, or compact amplification systems. These tests can provide results within minutes to hours and support screening, treatment selection, infection control, and disease surveillance. Their value depends on analytical sensitivity, specificity, specimen quality, and appropriate interpretation, while ongoing advances aim to improve multiplex detection and access in resource-limited settings.

A protocol to measure peripheral blood leukocytes using a POCT card-based leukocyte analyzer is presented here. Same blood samples were tested by two automated hematology analyzers to evaluate the consistency and accuracy of the results. The results showed that the evaluated analyzer had a good correlation with the reference system.

Mice (Mus musculus) are small rodents that breed and sexually mature quickly, making them perfectly suited to generating large animal colonies for biological research. As compared to other mammalian species, mice are simple and inexpensive to maintain in the laboratory. Nevertheless, mouse colonies do have specific husbandry needs that are critical to preserving animal health and safety as well as experimental reproducibility. This video demonstrates standard practices that ensure mice are...
