Porous Resin Column

A porous resin column is a chromatography device packed with porous polymer beads that separates dissolved molecules, making it valuable for analyzing and purifying biological samples. As a sample flows through the packed bed, molecules diffuse into resin pores and interact with the bead surface; differences in size, charge, hydrophobicity, or binding affinity determine how long each component is retained before elution. In immunology and infection research, porous resin columns help isolate antibodies, antigens, microbial proteins, and other biomolecules from complex mixtures. These separations support assay development, pathogen characterization, protein analysis, and production of purified reagents for diagnostics and research.

Source: Schaeffer, J. W., Chandler, et al. Detection of Viruses from Bioaerosols Using Anion Exchange Resin. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the detection of viruses from bioaerosols using an anion exchange resin. A liquid impinger containing the resin is used to capture viruses from the air. The resin is collected and treated with a virus lysis buffer containing carrier RNA. The lysate is transferred to a microcentrifuge tube for viral RNA isolation, followed by qRT-PCR to amplify...

Column Chromatography Multiple techniques exist to purify and separate compounds in an organic chemistry laboratory. One of the most reliable separation techniques for microscale separations, where less than 10 grams of the compound is available for analysis, is column chromatography. This technique separates compounds in a mixture based on their physical properties, such as their solubility, polarity, hydrophobicity, size, and charge. Chromatography Basics The main components of any...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Jimmy Franco - Merrimack College Column chromatography is one of the most useful techniques for purifying compounds. This technique utilizes a stationary phase, which is packed in a column, and a mobile phase that passes through the column. This technique exploits the differences in polarity between compounds, allowing the molecules to be facilely separated.1 The two most common stationary phases for column chromatography are silica gel (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3), with...
