Stromal Reflectivity Assessment

Stromal Reflectivity Assessment is the evaluation of light or ultrasound backscatter from a tissue’s stroma, the supportive framework surrounding functional cells, to characterize structural changes. Reflectivity varies with interfaces among extracellular matrix components, cells, fluids, and other tissue constituents; inflammation or infection can alter these features through edema, cellular infiltration, matrix remodeling, or microbial-associated damage. In immunology and infection research, comparing stromal reflectivity can help identify tissue injury, monitor inflammatory responses, and distinguish normal from diseased microenvironments. When combined with microscopy, imaging, or histological measurements, this assessment provides a non-destructive indicator of stromal organization and disease progression.

Reflection and Refraction

Source: Derek Wilson, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Light travels at different speeds depending on the material through which it is propagating. When light travels from one material to another, it will either slow down or speed up. In order to conserve energy and momentum, the light must change the direction in which it propagates. This bending of light is known as refraction. Some fraction of the...

The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison

According to Charles Cooley, we base our image on what we think other people see (Cooley 1902). We imagine how we must appear to others, then react to this speculation. We don certain clothes, prepare our hair in a particular manner, wear makeup, use cologne, and the like—all with the notion that our presentation of ourselves is going to affect how others perceive us. We expect a certain reaction, and, if lucky, we get the one we desire and feel good about it. But more than that, Cooley...

An In Vitro Flow Investigation of the Effect of Stromal Cells on Leukocyte Recruitment

2025

The video demonstrates a method for investigating the impact of stromal cells on leukocyte recruitment. In a parallel plate flow chamber model, pro-inflammatory cytokines induce the expression of adhesion receptors by endothelial cells, facilitating neutrophil recruitment and migration. The cross-talk between stromal cells and endothelial cells diminishes neutrophil recruitment to the endothelial cells.
