Th17 Polarizing Media

Th17 polarizing media are defined culture conditions that direct naive CD4+ T cells toward the T helper 17 (Th17) lineage, an immune program important for defense against extracellular pathogens and inflammatory disease. These media typically combine cytokines such as TGF-β, IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-23, which activate lineage-defining transcription factor RORγt and promote production of IL-17A and related effector molecules. In immunology and infection research, controlled Th17 differentiation systems help investigators examine host protection, barrier inflammation, and immune dysregulation, while comparing cytokine requirements across species or experimental models. The resulting cells support studies of infection mechanisms, autoimmunity, and therapeutic targets.

Inducing Paralysis in a Mouse Model via Transfer of Aquaporin-4-Specific Th17 Cells

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure of inducing paralysis by transferring activated Th17 cells targeting aquaporin-4 into a mouse model. In the central nervous system, the activated Th17 cells interact with aquaporin-4-expressing astrocytes, triggering an immune response that leads to tail and limb paralysis in the mouse.

Group Polarization

2020

Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). That is, if a group initially favors a viewpoint, after discussion the group consensus is likely a stronger endorsement of the viewpoint. Conversely, if the group was initially opposed to a viewpoint, group discussion would likely lead to stronger opposition. The phenomenon of group polarization explains many actions taken by groups that would not...

Dipole Moment of a Molecule Polar covalent bonds connect two atoms with differing electronegativities, leaving one atom with a partial positive charge (δ+) and the other atom with a partial negative charge (δ–), as the electrons are pulled toward the more electronegative atom. This separation of charge gives rise to a bond dipole moment. The magnitude of a bond dipole moment is represented by the Greek letter mu (µ) and is given by the formula shown here, where Q is the magnitude of the...

Automation of Mode Locking in a Nonlinear Polarization Rotation Fiber Laser through Output Polarization Measurements

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.
