Virus Load Measurement

Virus load measurement is the quantitative assessment of viral material in a biological sample, providing an indicator of infection burden and disease dynamics. In common molecular assays, viral nucleic acids are extracted from specimens and detected through amplification, such as reverse transcription quantitative PCR for RNA viruses; fluorescence is compared with calibrated standards to estimate the viral concentration. In immunology and infection research, these measurements help track viral replication, evaluate host immune control, monitor responses to antiviral treatment, and compare disease progression across patients or experimental conditions. Consistent sampling and assay calibration are essential for meaningful interpretation.

2025

In this video, we discuss the correlation between the CIT50 and the multiplicity of viral infections. The virus-infected cells display cytopathic effects, causing their death and detachment from the gold microelectrode, which in turn, reduces the impedance.

Virus Plaque Assay: A Technique to Measure Infectious Herpes Simplex Virus via Quantification of Plaques Formed in Monolayer of Virus-Infected Cells

This video describes the virus plaque assay of the infectious herpes simplex virus or HSV. The diluted viral particles are inoculated to the monolayer of epithelial cells. Upon incubation, the virus forms plaques and is counted visually to determine the infectious virus titer.
