Employment Status

Employment status is a classification of a person’s relationship to paid work and the labor market, commonly distinguishing employed, unemployed, and people outside the labor force. In macroeconomics, statistical agencies assign these categories using indicators such as current work activity, active job search, and availability for work, then calculate measures including the unemployment rate and labor force participation rate. These measures reveal how fully an economy uses its available labor and help identify changes in economic conditions. Governments, businesses, and researchers use employment-status data to assess recessions, guide monetary and fiscal policy, evaluate labor-market trends, and compare economic performance across regions and time.
