Adding Fractions

Adding fractions is the mathematical process of combining two or more fractional quantities to find their total, and it provides a foundation for comparing amounts, solving equations, and working with ratios. When fractions have a common denominator, add their numerators while keeping the denominator unchanged; when denominators differ, find a common denominator, often through the least common multiple, rewrite equivalent fractions, and then combine them. The result should be simplified by reducing common factors, and mixed numbers may require regrouping when the fractional parts sum to one or more wholes. This skill supports algebra, measurement, probability, and quantitative reasoning.

Marginal Dishonesty: The Adding-to-10 Task

2023

Source: Julian Wills & Jay Van Bavel—New York University Classical economic theory asserts that people are rational and self-interested. In addition to seeking wealth and status, people are motivated by other goals. As a result, financial motives can sometimes be dwarfed by other internal needs, such as maintaining a positive self-concept or affiliating with other group members. Ethical dilemmas, such as the temptation to cheat on taxes, can result when these motives are in conflict. On...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Nicholas Leadbeater — University of Connecticut Distillation is perhaps the most common laboratory technique employed by chemists for the purification of organic liquids. Compounds in a mixture with different boiling points separate into individual components when the mixture is carefully distilled. The two main types of distillation are "simple distillation" and "fractional distillation", and both are widely used in organic chemistry laboratories. Simple distillation...
