Congruent Rectangles

Congruent rectangles are rectangles that have the same size and shape, so one can be mapped onto the other through rigid motions such as translations, rotations, or reflections. Because every rectangle has four right angles, congruence is determined by matching corresponding side lengths: two rectangles are congruent when their length and width are equal, allowing for the possibility that the dimensions are paired in reverse order after rotation. This concept helps students distinguish congruence from similarity, in which figures share a shape but may differ in scale. Congruent rectangles are used in geometric proofs, coordinate transformations, area comparisons, and the analysis of symmetry and spatial design.

Average Value on a Rectangle

A snowfall map can represent how snow depth varies across a region, such as Colorado, over a fixed time period. Since different locations may receive different amounts of snow, the snowfall depth is described by a function of two variables. If f(x,y) represents the snow depth at a point in a rectangular region, then the average snowfall over the entire region is found by comparing the total accumulated snowfall with the area being measured.Total Snowfall over a RegionThe total snowfall over a...

Congruent Triangles

Congruent triangles are triangles that have exactly the same size and shape. Although congruent triangles may have different positions or orientations, their corresponding sides have equal lengths, and their corresponding angles have equal measures. To establish triangle congruence, it is not necessary to verify all six corresponding measurements. Several congruence criteria provide sufficient conditions. The Side-Side-Side (SSS) criterion states that two triangles are congruent when all three...

This bilingual Stroop task uses Congruent, Incongruent, and Neutral stimuli presented in blocks in the first language (L1) only, the second language (L2) only, and a combination of L1 and L2. This task allows for an examination of language processing and cognitive control in both L1 and L2.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Attention refers to the limited human ability to select some information for processing at the expense of other stimuli in the environment. Attention operates in all sensory modalities: vision, hearing, touch, even taste and smell. It is most often studied in the visual domain though. A common way to study visual attention is with a spatial cueing paradigm. This paradigm allows researchers to measure the consequences of focusing...
