Drawing Distortion

Drawing distortion is the mathematical alteration of a figure’s shape, size, proportions, or spatial relationships when it is represented in a different coordinate system, medium, or viewpoint. It occurs when transformations such as nonuniform scaling, shearing, projection, or coordinate warping change distances, angles, or areas between the original object and its drawing. Analyzing these changes helps distinguish exact geometric transformations from approximate representations and provides ways to quantify error. Drawing distortion is relevant to geometry, cartography, computer graphics, technical illustration, and data visualization, where preserving or intentionally modifying visual information affects interpretation and measurement.

Motor Learning in Mirror Drawing

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Colloquially, the terms learning and memory encompass a broad range of behaviors and mental systems, everything from learning to tie a shoe to mastering calculus (and a lot in between). Experimental psychologists have divided up learning mechanisms into groups that seem to have different properties, and that seem to rely on different brain systems. A major division is between declarative and non-declarative memory, roughly, the...

Detection of Architectural Distortion in Prior Mammograms via Analysis of Oriented Patterns

We demonstrate methods for the detection of architectural distortion in prior mammograms. Oriented structures are analyzed using Gabor filters and phase portraits to detect sites of radiating tissue patterns. Each site is characterized and classified using measures to represent spiculating patterns. The methods should assist in the detection of breast cancer.

Fabricating Metamaterials Using the Fiber Drawing Method

Metamaterials at terahertz frequencies offer unique opportunities, but are challenging to fabricate in bulk. We adapt the fabrication procedure for microstructured polymer optical fibers to inexpensively fabricate metamaterials potentially on an industrial scale. We produce polymethylmethacrylate fibers containing ~10 μm diameter indium wires separated by ~100 μm, which exhibit a terahertz plasmonic response.
