Mental Mathematics

Mental mathematics is the practice of performing numerical calculations and reasoning without relying on written algorithms or electronic tools, making it valuable for efficient problem solving and quantitative judgment. It works by combining number sense with strategies such as decomposition, rounding, estimation, and the use of arithmetic properties to simplify calculations in working memory. In mathematics education, these methods strengthen fluency, flexibility, and confidence while helping learners recognize relationships among numbers. Mental mathematics also supports everyday decisions, including estimating costs, checking written calculations, comparing quantities, and evaluating whether numerical results are reasonable.

Mental Rotation

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Visual mental imagery refers to the ability to conjure images in one’s mind’s eye. This allows people to process visual material above and beyond the constraints of a current point-of-view; for example, a person could imagine, using their mind’s eye, how something might look in a different color, or what it would look like if it were made from a different material or rotated and seen from a different perspective. Mental imagery...

Source: Carmen Black, Matthew Goldenberg, and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The mental status exam is a clinical evaluation of emotional, perceptual, and cognitive functioning that spans both the fields of psychiatry and neurology. Developing skill in the psychiatric portions of the examination are important to describe salient aspects of the patient's mental state that may be observed during routine history and/or physical exam. Proficiency in the cognitive portions of this...

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) serves as the primary classification system for mental health disorders, providing standardized diagnostic criteria for clinicians and researchers. First published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1952, the DSM has undergone several revisions to reflect evolving psychiatric understanding. The fifth edition, DSM-5, was published in 2013, followed by its text revision, DSM-5-TR, in 2022. This revision incorporates...

The Mathematics of Equilibrium

Consider the market for compact cars as an example, where 'P' stands for the price of a compact car in thousands of dollars. We can model the quantity demanded (Qd) and quantity supplied (Qs) with the following linear equations: Quantity Demanded for Compact Cars: Qd = 60−3P Quantity Supplied for Compact Cars: Qs = 20+2P At market equilibrium, Qd = Qs. By setting these two equations equal to each other, we can solve for 'P', the equilibrium price: 60−3P = 20+2P Solving this equation gives us...

Mathematical Induction

Mathematical induction is a structured method of proof used to confirm the truth of statements involving natural numbers. Consider the sum of the first n natural numbers:This formula describes a pattern that appears to hold true as more terms are added. To verify that it is valid for all natural numbers, mathematical induction proceeds in two essential steps. The first is the base case, where the formula is tested for the initial value, typically n = 1. Substituting into both sides confirms the...
