Fair Share

Fair share is a mathematical principle for dividing a quantity, resource, or responsibility so that each person or group receives an equitable portion. In the simplest case, division distributes a total equally, while fractions, ratios, and proportional reasoning adjust the allocation when participants contribute different amounts or have different claims. Fair-share reasoning helps students interpret remainders, compare portions, and model real-world decisions such as splitting costs, distributing supplies, assigning workloads, or dividing land. In more advanced mathematics, fair-division methods and apportionment rules formalize competing claims and evaluate whether an allocation is balanced, transparent, and consistent.
