Gear System

A gear system is a set of toothed wheels that transfers rotational motion and mechanical power between shafts, making it a practical example of how geometry governs movement. When gear teeth mesh, the ratio of their tooth counts determines the relationship between angular velocity and torque: a smaller driving gear turns a larger gear faster or slower depending on the arrangement, while conserving ideal mechanical power. In mathematics, gear systems apply ratios, proportional reasoning, circular motion, and rotational geometry to model speed, force, and direction changes. These models support mechanical design, robotics, clockwork, and engineering analysis by predicting how linked components will move.

Observing Plant Adaptations ExpandTo begin, first remove the compound microscopes from storage, and place them at the appropriate stations around the room, then place one dissecting microscope at each station. NOTE: One set of microscopes for a group of four students works well. Next, acquire prepared slides of moss antheridia, moss archegonia, onion stomata, and conifer pollen, and then place one slide at each microscope station. Now, set out materials needed for plant analysis, like rulers to...

We describe a technique for inscribing identical fiber Bragg gratings into each core of a multicore fiber. This is achieved by introducing an additional surface into the optical path to mitigate lensing by the curved surface of the fiber cladding.

Transcriptomic Analysis of C. elegans RNA Sequencing Data Through the Tuxedo Suite on the Galaxy Project

Galaxy and DAVID have emerged as popular tools that allow investigators without bioinformatics training to analyze and interpret RNA-Seq data. We describe a protocol for C. elegans researchers to perform RNA-Seq experiments, access and process the dataset using Galaxy and obtain meaningful biological information from the gene lists using DAVID.
