Integral Basis

An integral basis is a basis of the ring of integers of an algebraic number field as a free module over the integers, allowing every algebraic integer to be written uniquely as an integer linear combination of its basis elements. Unlike a basis over the rational numbers, it captures the field’s arithmetic structure, including which elements satisfy monic polynomials with integer coefficients. Constructing one typically refines a rational basis by accounting for denominators through index and discriminant computations. Integral bases support calculations involving ideals, norms, traces, discriminants, and class groups in algebraic number theory.

Accrual Basis of Accounting

2025

Accrual basis accounting records revenues and expenses when they are earned or incurred, regardless of when the associated cash is received or paid. This approach emphasizes the economic substance of transactions, aligning financial reporting with the actual timing of business activity rather than the cash flow timeline. Accrual accounting provides a comprehensive and consistent view of financial performance by recognizing income when goods or services are delivered and expenses when they...

Cash Basis of Accounting

2025

The cash basis of accounting records revenues and expenses strictly based on the timing of cash transactions. Under this approach, income is recognized only when cash is received, and expenses are recorded only when payments are made. This method deviates from accrual accounting, which recognizes revenues when earned and expenses when incurred, regardless of cash movement. The primary appeal of the cash basis lies in its simplicity. It suits small businesses, sole proprietors, and service-based...

Cost Basis vs. Fair Value Accounting

2025

Cost basis and fair value accounting represent two contrasting methods for valuing assets, each with distinct implications for financial reporting and decision-making. These methods not only influence how companies report their financial position but also affect investor perceptions and regulatory compliance.Cost basis accounting relies on the historical cost principle, meaning assets are recorded at their acquisition price and remain unchanged over time unless impaired. This approach is valued...

We describe a method to record motor activity, timed to the electrically recorded tarsal contact signal in a tethered insect, walking on a slippery surface. This is used to study the neural basis of adaptive behavior under reduced influence of mechanical interaction between legs through the substrate.

Integration by Parts: Indefinite Integrals

2026

Integration by parts is a fundamental technique in calculus for evaluating integrals involving the product of two functions. It is particularly useful when direct integration is not feasible. The method is based on the product rule for differentiation, which states that the derivative of a product equals the derivative of the first function times the second, plus the first function times the derivative of the second. By integrating this identity and rearranging terms, the integration by parts...
