Percent Problems

Percent problems are mathematical questions that express a quantity as a fraction of 100, making it easier to compare amounts, describe proportions, and measure change. They use the relationship percent = part ÷ whole × 100, while related calculations find an unknown part, whole, percentage, or percent increase or decrease by rearranging this relationship. Percent problems apply to discounts, taxes, interest, data analysis, probability, and scientific measurements, helping interpret relative differences in real-world and quantitative contexts. Mastering them strengthens proportional reasoning and supports accurate decision-making in fields ranging from finance and health to engineering and research.

Determining the Mass Percent Composition in an Aqueous Solution

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams — SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Determining the composition of a solution is an important analytical and forensic technique. When solutions are made with water, they are referred to as being aqueous, or containing water. The primary component of a solution is referred to as the solvent, and the dissolved minor component is called the solute. The solute is dissolved in the solvent to make a solution. Water is the most common solvent in...

Bond Polarity, Dipole Moment, and Percent Ionic Character

Bond Polarity The absolute value of the difference in electronegativity (ΔEN) of two bonded atoms provides a rough measure of the polarity to be expected in the bond and, thus, the bond type. When the difference is very small or zero, the bond is covalent and nonpolar. When it is large, the bond is polar covalent or ionic. The absolute values of the electronegativity differences between the atoms in the bonds H–H, H–Cl, and Na–Cl are 0 (nonpolar), 0.9 (polar covalent), and 2.1 (ionic),...

100-Percent-Reserve Banking

2025

Imagine an economy without any banks; the entire money supply is held by the public in the form of physical currency. This means that the amount of money in the economy is equal to the total value of currency held by households and firms. Now, a commercial bank is introduced, and the public is assumed to deposit all their currency into the bank. If the bank does not issue any loans and instead holds all the deposited money in reserve, it is known as a 100-percent-reserve banking system. In this...

This article describes surface labeling and ex ovo tissue culture in the early chick embryo. Techniques amenable to time-lapse bright field, fluorescence, and optical coherence tomography imaging are presented. Tracking surface labels with high spatiotemporal resolution enables kinematic quantities such as morphogenetic strains (deformations) to be calculated in both two and three dimensions.
