Side Length

Side length is the distance between two adjacent vertices of a polygon or the measure of an edge in a geometric figure, and it helps describe the figure’s size, shape, and relationships. It is determined by measuring the segment directly or by calculating it from known information, such as perimeter, area, angles, or other lengths; for a square, for example, each side equals the perimeter divided by four. Side lengths support calculations of perimeter, area, surface area, and volume, while comparisons among them can identify properties such as congruence, symmetry, and regularity. In mathematics, engineering, and design, accurate side-length calculations connect diagrams with quantitative models and real-world dimensions.
