Parentheses Grouping

Parentheses grouping is a mathematical notation and problem-solving method that identifies which quantities or operations should be treated together. In an expression, operations inside parentheses are performed before operations outside them, while nested parentheses are evaluated from the innermost group outward; parentheses can also clarify multiplication, subtraction, and the distribution of a factor across a sum or difference. This convention helps preserve intended meaning when simplifying arithmetic expressions, solving equations, evaluating functions, and translating real-world relationships into algebraic models. Accurate grouping reduces ambiguity and supports reliable symbolic manipulation across mathematics, science, engineering, and quantitative analysis.

Ionic Compounds: Formulas and Nomenclature

2020

An element composed of atoms that readily lose electrons (a metal) can react with an element composed of atoms that readily gain electrons (a nonmetal) to produce ions through complete electron transfer. The compound formed by this transfer is stabilized by the electrostatic attractions (ionic bonds) between the oppositely charged ions. Moving from the far right to the left on the periodic table, nonmetal elements often gain electrons to form anions with the same number of electrons as an atom...

In most main group element compounds, the valence electrons of the isolated atoms combine to form chemical bonds that satisfy the octet rule. For instance, the four valence electrons of carbon overlap with electrons from four hydrogen atoms to form CH4. The one valence electron leaves sodium and adds to the seven valence electrons of chlorine to form the ionic formula unit NaCl (Figure 1a). Transition metals do not normally bond in this fashion. They primarily form coordinate covalent bonds, a...

Melting Land and Sea Ice ExpandNOTE: This activity is a simulation of land- and sea-ice melting and their effects on water levels. First, label one graduated cylinder as 'Sea Ice' and the other graduated cylinder as 'Land Ice.' Hypotheses: the experimental hypothesis might be that the land ice melting will cause the water level to rise more than the melting sea ice. The null hypothesis would be that there will be no difference in the change in water level between the two containers. Add 10 ice...

Chemical Equations

Chemical equations represent the identities and relative quantities of substances involved in a chemical reaction. The substances undergoing reaction are called reactants, and their formulas are placed on the left side of the equation. The substances generated by the reaction are called products, and their formulas are placed on the right side of the equation. Plus signs (+) separate individual reactant and product formulas, and an arrow (→) separates the reactant and product (left and right)...

Extraction and Analysis of Microbial Phospholipid Fatty Acids in Soils

2016

Phospholipid fatty acids provide information about the structure of soil microbial communities. We present methods for extraction from soil samples with a single-phase chloroform mixture, fractionation of extracted lipids using solid phase extraction columns, and methanolysis to produce fatty acid methyl esters, which are analyzed by capillary gas chromatography.
