Threshold Behavior

Threshold behavior describes the abrupt or qualitative change in a mathematical system when a variable, parameter, or input crosses a critical value. It occurs when a governing rule, inequality, probability, or nonlinear relationship switches between regimes, so small changes near the threshold can produce disproportionately large changes in the outcome. In mathematics, threshold behavior helps analyze phase transitions, bifurcations, percolation, optimization constraints, and decision models. Identifying the critical value and characterizing behavior on either side clarifies when a system remains stable, becomes active, or undergoes a structural change, making the concept valuable in applied mathematics, statistics, and computational modeling.

Here, we describe a rapid reliable and simple procedure to determine the lowest temperature at which rats or mice show nocifensive behavior, i.e. the thermal nociceptive threshold (TNT). This method applies a slowly increasing thermal stimulus allowing precise and reproducible estimation of TNTs with minimum, if any, stress to the animals.

The Staircase Procedure for Finding a Perceptual Threshold

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Psychophysics is the name for a set of methods in perceptual psychology designed in order to relate the actual intensity of stimuli to their perceptual intensity. One important aspect of psychophysics involves the measurement of perceptual thresholds: How bright does a light need to be for a person to be able to detect it? How little pressure applied to the skin is detectable? How soft can a sound be and still be heard? Put...

Determining heat and mechanical pain threshold in inflamed skin of human subjects

2009

Algorithms assessing heat and mechanical pain thresholds in experimentally inflamed skin of human study subjects are shown. The two pain testing paradigms independently examine nociceptive processing by the two major peripheral nerve fiber populations transmitting pain, i.e., non-myelinated C fibers and small myelinated A-delta fibers.
