Vector Span

Vector span is the set of all vectors that can be formed from one or more given vectors through linear combinations, making it a fundamental concept for describing subspaces in mathematics. To construct a span, multiply each generating vector by a scalar and add the resulting vectors; allowing every possible choice of scalars produces the complete set. The span may be a point, line, plane, or higher-dimensional subspace, depending on the vectors’ linear independence. In mathematics and applied fields, vector spans help identify bases, analyze systems of linear equations, represent geometric objects, and determine the dimensions of vector spaces.

Measuring Verbal Working Memory Span

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Why is it relatively hard to remember everything on a shopping list if it includes more than just a handful of items? Why is it possible to remember a phone number that one just heard, but not two or three phone numbers at once? Why is it difficult to remember names when several new people are introduced at the same time? The answer has to do with the fact that over short-durations people rely on a specialized memory system...

Spanning Openings in Brick Walls

2024

In brick wall construction, supporting structures are crucial for openings like windows and doors to maintain the integrity and support the weight of the wall above. These supports include lintels, corbels, and arches, each serving specific structural purposes. Lintels are primary supports used to span openings and can be crafted from materials such as reinforced concrete, steel-reinforced brick masonry, or simple steel angles. These are straightforward to install and are typically concealed...

Vectors in Multiple Directions

Source: Nicholas Timmons, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment demonstrates how vectors add and subtract in multiple directions. The goal will be to analytically calculate the addition or subtraction of multiple vectors and then to experimentally confirm the calculations. A vector is an object with both magnitude and direction. The magnitude of a vector is simply denoted as the length,...

Principles of the Life-Span Developmental Approach: Part 2

2026

Paul B. Baltes and colleagues described several key principles of lifespan development to explain how individuals change from childhood through late adulthood. These principles focus on the allocation of personal resources, the capacity for change, and the influence of historical and cultural environments. They show that development can change but is also limited by individual and environmental conditions.Development Involves Changing Resource AllocationsAcross the lifespan, individuals...

A Protocol for the Production of Integrase-deficient Lentiviral Vectors for CRISPR/Cas9-mediated Gene Knockout in Dividing Cells

2017

We describe the production strategy of integrase-deficient lentiviral vectors (IDLVs) as vehicles for delivering CRISPR/Cas9 to cells. With an ability to mediate quick and robust gene editing in cells, IDLVs present a safer and equally effective vector platform for gene delivery compared to integrase-competent vectors.
