Atrial Flap Anastomosis

Atrial flap anastomosis is a cardiovascular surgical technique that uses atrial tissue to create or reconstruct a connection between cardiac structures or vessels. Surgeons fashion a flap from the atrial wall, position it to form or enlarge a passage, and secure its edges with sutures to guide blood flow or close a structural defect. This tissue-based reconstruction can support repair of congenital heart abnormalities and other conditions requiring restoration of intracardiac pathways. By using native, vascularized tissue, the technique may provide a flexible repair while reducing the need for synthetic material, although outcomes depend on anatomy, surgical precision, and postoperative healing.

The accompanying video describes a procedure for percutaneous placement of the WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) Device. The WATCHMAN is a nitinol device designed to be permanently implanted at, or slightly distal to, the opening of the left atrial appendage (LAA) to trap blood clots before they exit the LAA, preventing thromboembolic stroke.
