Blood Sample Quality

Blood sample quality refers to the accuracy, integrity, and suitability of a blood specimen for laboratory analysis, making it essential for reliable diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment decisions. It depends on preanalytical conditions such as patient preparation, correct tube selection, proper collection and mixing, prompt transport, and appropriate storage, while problems such as hemolysis, clotting, contamination, or insufficient volume can alter test results. Assessing sample quality helps laboratories identify specimens that may produce misleading measurements and determine whether recollection is necessary. In medicine, consistent quality control improves result accuracy, supports patient safety, and strengthens the validity of clinical and research findings.

We present a noninvasive sampling approach to efficiently collect hair samples from elusive small mammals, as shown for the American pika. We demonstrate the utility of this method by extracting DNA from sampled hair and amplifying several types of molecular markers commonly used in studies of wildlife ecology and conservation.

Detection of Rhesus Factor in Human Blood Samples using Magnetic Levitation

2025

This video demonstrates the detection of the Rhesus (Rh) factor in blood samples using a magnetic levitation instrument. The magnetic field aligns and levitates beads and blood cells based on density. Treating the samples with anti-Rh antibodies results in intermediate-density bead-cell complexes' formation, allowing for the differentiation of Rh-positive and Rh-negative red blood cells.
