Cognitive Task Battery

A Cognitive Task Battery is a structured set of standardized tests used to assess multiple aspects of cognitive function, making it useful for measuring performance systematically in medicine and research. The battery presents tasks that target distinct abilities, such as attention, memory, processing speed, or executive function, and combines performance measures across tasks to characterize an individual’s cognitive profile. Clinicians and researchers use these assessments to identify patterns of impairment, monitor changes over time, and evaluate responses to medical interventions. Consistent administration and scoring also support comparisons among patients, study groups, and repeated testing sessions.

Children who have complex communication needs can benefit from the use of a speech-generating device (SGD). Cognitive skills were identified as having an impact on the ability to navigate between levels of SGDs. This protocol describes the steps needed for Speech-language Pathologists to assess cognitive skills and navigational abilities.

Monitoring brain activity outside the lab without physical constraints presents methodological challenges. A fiberless, wearable functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) system was used to measure brain activity during an ecological prospective memory task. It was demonstrated that this system could be used to monitor brain activity during non-lab based experiments.
