Copd Diarrhea

COPD diarrhea refers to loose or frequent stools occurring in a person with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, rather than a defining feature of COPD itself. It may result from antibiotic treatment during exacerbations, medication effects, gastrointestinal infection, or another concurrent condition; antibiotics can disturb intestinal microbes and alter normal bowel function. Clinical assessment therefore includes reviewing recent medicines, hydration status, illness severity, and warning signs such as blood in the stool, fever, severe pain, or persistent symptoms. Recognizing the cause helps clinicians prevent dehydration, identify complications, and distinguish treatment-related effects from unrelated gastrointestinal disease.

Source: Nag, D., et.al. Quantifying Vibrio cholerae Colonization and Diarrhea in the Adult Zebrafish Model. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the inoculation of adult zebrafish with a pathogenic Vibrio cholerae strain to study intestinal colonization and disease outcomes. It shows how bacterial toxins disrupt intestinal integrity, leading to fluid leakage, mucus secretion, and watery diarrhea before the fish are prepared for further analysis.

Drugs for Treatment of Diarrhea-Predominant IBS

Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is a subtype of IBS characterized primarily by frequent, loose, or watery stools, abdominal pain, and abdominal discomfort. Therapeutic approaches to managing IBS-D include dietary changes, stress management techniques, and pharmaceutical interventions. Two specific drugs used in the treatment are alosetron (Lotronex) and eluxadoline (Viberzi). Alosetron, a 5-HT3 antagonist, works by slowing the movement of stools in the gut, reducing bowel...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a group of lung conditions that progressively worsen over time, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. This cluster of diseases collectively leads to a gradual and irreversible decline in lung function over time. The primary cause for the onset of COPD is cigarette smoking and exposure to air pollution. These hazardous factors initiate a chain reaction within the lungs, resulting in chronic inflammation, damage to the airways, and a...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary isease (COPD) involves a group of progressive lung disorders characterized by persistent airflow limitation and chronic respiratory symptoms. Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome (ACOS), encompassing features of both asthma and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is a group of progressive lung disorders that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and refractory (non-reversible) asthma. ACOS leads to complex clinical presentations that combine the inflammatory...

Zebrafish are a natural Vibrio cholerae host and can be used to recapitulate and study the entire infectious cycle from colonization to transmission. Here, we demonstrate how to assess V. cholerae colonization levels and quantify diarrhea in zebrafish.
