Drop-off Task Assessment

Drop-off task assessment is a behavioral method used to evaluate motor coordination, balance, and postural control by observing how an animal responds when positioned on an elevated surface. During the task, the subject is placed at a defined height, and investigators record measures such as latency to descend or fall, movement patterns, and the ability to maintain its position under standardized conditions. These outcomes can reveal impairments associated with neurological injury, disease, drug exposure, or genetic alteration. In medicine and preclinical research, the assessment supports objective comparison of motor function and helps evaluate disease progression or treatment effects.

Assessing Dexterity with Reaching Tasks

2023

Reaching tasks are employed in behavioral neuroscience to investigate motor learning and forelimb dexterity. Much like human hands, rodents have dexterous forepaws, which are necessary for executing coordinated and precise motor movements. Experimenters may utilize food rewards to train rodents to reach and for testing their reaching abilities. These tasks help behavioral neuroscientist in understanding how CNS injuries, such as a stroke, may impair reaching ability and dexterity in humans.

Children who have complex communication needs can benefit from the use of a speech-generating device (SGD). Cognitive skills were identified as having an impact on the ability to navigate between levels of SGDs. This protocol describes the steps needed for Speech-language Pathologists to assess cognitive skills and navigational abilities.

Piaget's Conservation Task and the Influence of Task Demands

2023

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville Jean Piaget was a pioneer in the field of developmental psychology, and his theory of cognitive development is one of the most well-known psychological theories. At the heart of Piaget’s theory is the idea that children’s ways of thinking change over the course of childhood. Piaget provided evidence for these changes by comparing how children of different ages responded to questions and problems that he...

This protocol describes the 5-choice serial reaction time task, which is an operant based task used to study attention and impulse control in rodents. Test day challenges, which are modifications of the standard task, increase flexibility of the task and can be combined with other manipulations to more fully characterize behavior.
