Duodenal Wall Repair

Duodenal wall repair is a surgical procedure that restores the integrity of the duodenum after perforation, trauma, ulceration, or operative injury, helping prevent leakage of intestinal contents and serious infection. Repair typically involves identifying and preparing the defect, closing the disrupted wall in a tension-free manner, and reinforcing the closure when needed to support tissue healing and maintain luminal continuity. In medicine, this intervention is important for managing acute abdominal emergencies and selected postoperative complications, while careful assessment of tissue viability, contamination, and surrounding structures guides the choice of repair and influences recovery.

2012

A technique called Comprehensive Microarray Polymer Profiling (CoMPP) for the characterisation of plant cell wall glycans is described. This method combines the specificity of monoclonal antibodies directed to defined glycan-epitopes with a miniature microarray analytical platform allowing screening of glycan occurrence in a broad range of biological contexts.

Overview of DNA Repair

2020

In order to be passed through generations, genomic DNA must be undamaged and error-free. However, every day, DNA in a cell undergoes several thousand to a million damaging events by natural causes and external factors. Ionizing radiation such as UV rays, free radicals produced during cellular respiration, and hydrolytic damage from metabolic reactions can alter the structure of DNA. Damages caused include single-base alteration, base dimerization, chain breaks, and cross-linkage. Chemically...

Base Excision Repair

2020

One of the common DNA damages is the chemical alteration of single bases by alkylation, oxidation, or deamination. The altered bases cause mispairing and strand breakage during replication. This type of damage causes minimal change to the DNA double helix structure and can be repaired by the base excision repair (BER) pathways. BER corrects damaged DNA sequences by removing the damaged base and restoring the original base sequence using the complementary strand as a template. The first step of...

This manuscript describes methods associated with creation and repair of a ventral abdominal wall defect (hernia). This model can be used to study repair strategies such as those that use implanted materials. In this manuscript, repair of the experimental hernia with porcine small intestinal submucosa is presented as an example.

Long-patch Base Excision Repair

2020

Since the discovery of the two BER pathways, there has been a debate about how a cell chooses one pathway over the other and the factors determining this selection. Numerous in vitro experiments have pointed out multiple determinants for the sub-pathway selection. These are: Lesion type: Depending on the type of base damage, a specific DNA glycosylase - mono or bifunctional, is recruited to the damaged site. While the sequential action of a monofunctional glycosylase favors long patch repair...
