Endoscopic Thyroid Surgery

Endoscopic thyroid surgery is a minimally invasive technique for removing part or all of the thyroid through small incisions, often placed away from the neck to reduce visible scarring. A slender endoscope provides magnified visualization, while specialized instruments dissect thyroid tissue through narrow working channels; some approaches use carbon dioxide insufflation to create an operative space. In carefully selected patients, the procedure can treat thyroid nodules, goiter, or certain thyroid cancers while potentially improving cosmetic outcomes compared with conventional open surgery. Its use requires appropriate anatomy, disease characteristics, and surgical expertise, with attention to complications such as bleeding, nerve injury, and altered calcium regulation.
