Fertilization Observation

Fertilization observation is the microscopic assessment of sperm-egg interaction and the earliest signs of embryo formation, providing essential information about reproductive function and developmental potential. In clinical embryology, specialists monitor events such as sperm entry, pronuclear formation, pronuclear fusion, and the first cell divisions under controlled laboratory conditions, often using time-lapse imaging or conventional microscopy. These observations support in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection by confirming fertilization, identifying abnormal development, and guiding embryo selection. They also help researchers investigate gamete biology, infertility, early embryogenesis, and factors that influence reproductive treatment outcomes.

The Immediate Partial Removal of Cumulus-Oocyte Complexes: A Refined Approach for Rapid Observation of In Vitro Fertilization

2024

Here, we present an optimized method for promptly removing a portion of cumulus-oocyte complexes following egg retrieval to expedite the IVF observation process, reducing the time required for granulosa cell removal, minimizing oocyte exposure to external elements, and does not hinder embryo development, ultimately improving the efficiency of IVF laboratory procedures.

During fertilization, an egg and sperm cell fuse to create a new diploid structure. In humans, the process occurs once the egg has been released from the ovary, and travels into the fallopian tubes. The process requires several key steps: 1) sperm present in the genital tract must locate the egg; 2) once there, sperm need to release enzymes to help them burrow through the protective zona pellucida of the egg; and 3) the membranes of a single sperm cell and egg must fuse, with the sperm...

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a form of assisted reproductive technology where an egg is fertilized with sperm in a controlled laboratory environment before transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus. This process is designed to help individuals and couples experiencing difficulties conceiving. The IVF process begins with ovarian stimulation, during which reproductive endocrinologists prescribe hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs instead of the single...

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University If you want to know how someone thinks or feels, you can ask that person questions. Another approach is to observe how the person is acting or look for indicators of how they acted in the past. While observations may seem revealing, it isn’t always easy to know if they are truly accurate. For instance, you may see a person smiling and assume they are happy, when in reality they are annoyed and...

The zebrafish is a powerful model system for developmental biology and human disease research due to their genetic similarity with higher vertebrates. This protocol describes a methodology to create haploid zebrafish embryos that can be utilized for forward screen strategies to identify recessive mutations in genes essential for early embryogenesis.
