Fetal Measurements

Fetal measurements are quantitative assessments of a developing fetus, typically obtained with ultrasound, that help characterize gestational age, growth, and development during pregnancy. Clinicians measure structures such as crown-rump length, biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length, then compare these values with gestational-age reference standards to estimate size and identify growth patterns. In medicine, fetal biometry supports prenatal dating, detection of suspected fetal growth restriction or excessive growth, and monitoring of pregnancies over time. Accurate, standardized measurements can guide further evaluation and care while recognizing that interpretation depends on gestational age, technique, and clinical context.

Fetal and perinatal death is a common feature when studying genetic alterations affecting cardiac development. High-frequency ultrasound imaging has improved 2-D resolution and can provide excellent information on early cardiac development and is an ideal method to detect the impact on cardiac structure and function prior to death.

Optimization of occlusion pressure and duration required to improve lung hypoplasia with tracheal occlusion is essential to improve in utero corrective treatments for congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). This study reports a new method for continuous measurement of the tracheal pressure in an occluded and unoccluded fetal lamb surgical model of CDH.

Various animal models of congenital diaphragmatic hernia and fetal tracheal occlusion present advantages and disadvantages regarding ethical issues, cost, surgical difficulty, size, survival rates, and availability of genetic tools. This model provides a new tool to study the impact of both tracheal occlusion and increased luminal pressure on lung development.
