Glucose Infusion Rate

Glucose infusion rate (GIR) measures the amount of glucose delivered intravenously relative to body weight and time, typically in mg/kg/min, and helps assess metabolic support and glucose control. Clinicians calculate GIR from the dextrose concentration and infusion rate, then adjust for body weight to estimate glucose availability for cellular uptake and energy metabolism. In medicine, GIR guides intravenous therapy for neonatal hypoglycemia, parenteral nutrition, and critically ill patients who require controlled glucose delivery. Monitoring GIR alongside blood glucose helps clinicians balance energy needs against risks such as hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, and excessive metabolic load.

Evaluating the Effect of Continuous Drug Infusion into the Mouse Brain on Peripheral Glucose Levels

2025

This video demonstrates the effect of continuous drug infusion into the mouse brain on blood glucose levels. Glucose metabolism is assessed by collecting blood from a fasted mouse's tail and measuring glucose levels before and after oral glucose administration. Insulin tolerance is evaluated by injecting insulin in the mouse, with glucose levels recorded at specific intervals.
