Gold Severity

GOLD severity is a standardized system for describing the degree of airflow limitation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), helping clinicians interpret lung function and disease burden. It is determined primarily by post-bronchodilator spirometry, using forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) as a percentage of the predicted value: GOLD 1 is mild, GOLD 2 moderate, GOLD 3 severe, and GOLD 4 very severe obstruction. In clinical medicine, this classification supports COPD assessment, treatment planning, monitoring, and communication among healthcare professionals. Because spirometric severity does not fully capture symptoms or exacerbation risk, clinicians interpret it alongside patient history and other measures.
