Implant-based Reconstruction

Implant-based reconstruction is a surgical approach that uses manufactured implants to restore the shape, structure, or function of a body part after tissue loss, injury, disease, or congenital difference. During the procedure, a biocompatible device is positioned within or beneath surrounding tissues, where its size, shape, and mechanical properties provide structural support while the body heals around it; planning also considers soft-tissue coverage and implant stability. In medicine, this approach supports breast, craniofacial, dental, and orthopedic reconstruction, helping improve physical function, symmetry, and quality of life. Patient selection, surgical technique, and long-term monitoring are central to safety and durable outcomes.

This protocol describes the use of 3D planning and printing for reconstruction of bony defects. We use segmentation tools to create 3D models followed by 3D design software to create patient specific implants for reconstruction purposes concomitant to ablative surgery or as a second stage.

Coronoid-Temporalis Pedicled Flap for Orbital Floor Defect Reconstruction

2025

This protocol presents a novel coronoid-temporalis pedicled flap (CTPF) technique for reconstructing small-to-medium orbital floor defects. CTPF avoids microvascular risks while maintaining biomechanical stability. Clinical cases demonstrate effective structural restoration, reduced complications, and preserved facial symmetry, offering a viable alternative to traditional grafts or alloplastic materials.

2012

Dual-chamber implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) may improve detection of atrial fibrillation as well as differentiation of tachycardias. However, this advantage is undermined by complications associated with the second electrode, which is required in conventional dual chamber devices. Therefore, BIOTRONIK has developed a new electrode called the LinoxSMART S DX that, when used in conjunction with the Lumax DX ICD, offers dual-chamber detection without the risks associated with the...

Microbead Implantation in the Zebrafish Embryo

2015

The zebrafish is an excellent model system for genetic and developmental studies. Bead implantation is a valuable tissue manipulation technique that can be used to interrogate developmental mechanisms by introducing alterations in local cellular environments. This protocol describes how to perform microbead implantation in the zebrafish embryo.
