Left Atrium Bypass

Left atrium bypass is a circulatory support technique that reroutes blood around the left ventricle to maintain systemic blood flow when the heart cannot pump effectively. A cannula withdraws oxygenated blood from the left atrium, and an external pump returns it to the aorta, reducing left ventricular preload and work while supporting organ perfusion. In medicine, this approach can provide temporary hemodynamic assistance during severe left-sided heart failure or cardiogenic shock and may serve as a bridge to recovery, longer-term mechanical support, or transplantation. Its use requires careful management of blood flow, anticoagulation, and vascular access to limit complications.

The following protocol describes the methodology for the acquisition and analysis of echocardiographic images used to obtain the Left Atrial Volume (LAV), Aorta (Ao) diameter, and Pulmonary Artery (PA) diameter in mice. This technique is a non-invasive, non-terminal procedure that allows assessment of the cardiopulmonary function.

Accurate intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) shows significant accuracy in estimating the left atrial structure, a prospective and promising cardiac structure estimation method. Here we propose a protocol for three-dimensional modeling of the left atrium and pulmonary veins with ICE and fast anatomical mapping (FAM) catheter remodeling.
