Maximal Twitch Tension

Maximal twitch tension is the greatest force a muscle generates in response to a single, brief supramaximal electrical stimulus, providing a measure of contractile function. The stimulus depolarizes the motor nerve or muscle membrane, triggers calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum, and enables actin-myosin cross-bridge cycling during excitation-contraction coupling. In medicine and muscle physiology, measuring maximal twitch tension helps assess neuromuscular transmission, muscle contractility, fatigue, and recovery. Comparing twitch responses before and after nerve stimulation, exercise, or pharmacological intervention can reveal impairments associated with neuromuscular disorders and evaluate how treatments affect skeletal muscle performance.

Profit Maximization vs. Wealth Maximization

2024

Profit maximization aims to achieve immediate financial gains by reducing costs and increasing revenues. This short-term focus involves aggressive cost-cutting and sales strategies. For example, Amazon initially pursued profit maximization by optimizing operations and rapidly expanding its product range. Although this approach increased short-term profits, it often led to criticisms regarding labor conditions and environmental impacts. In contrast, wealth maximization aims to increase the...

Tests of Hardened Concrete in Tension

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA In a previous laboratory focused on concrete in compression, we observed that concrete can withstand very large stresses under uniaxial compressive forces. However, the failures observed were not compressive failures but failures along shear planes where maximum tensile forces occur. Thus, it is important to understand the behavior of concrete in tension and particularly its maximum strength...

Tension

Tension is a force along the length of a medium, in particular, a force carried by a flexible medium, such as a rope or cable. The word "tension" comes from Latin, meaning "to stretch". Not coincidentally, the flexible cords that carry muscle forces to other parts of the body are called tendons. Any flexible connector, such as a string, rope, chain, wire, or cable, can exert pull only parallel to its length; so, a force carried by a flexible connector is a tension with a direction parallel to...
