Meibomian Gland Loss

Meibomian gland loss, also called meibomian gland dropout, is the reduction or disappearance of oil-producing glands in the eyelids and an important cause of meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye. Normally, these glands release meibum, a lipid-rich secretion that forms the outer tear-film layer and limits evaporation; when gland structure or function declines, tear-film stability can decrease and ocular-surface irritation may develop. Clinicians use meibography and related eye examinations to assess gland morphology, support diagnosis, and monitor progression. Measuring gland loss also helps researchers investigate risk factors, disease mechanisms, and treatments that preserve or restore tear-film function.

Dry eye disease is an increasingly common condition, which strongly impair patients' life quality. Recently, a new device employing intense pulsed light, specifically designed for the periocular area, has been shown to improve tear film stability and ocular discomfort symptoms in dry eye disease owing to meibomian gland dysfunction.

Line Loss

The different configurations of source-load connections include wye (star) and delta connections. The relationship between line and phase voltages and currents varies depending on the configuration. When the source is supplying power, it is transmitted through the wires to the load, and during this transmission, some power is absorbed by the wires, leading to line loss. Line loss impacts power delivery efficiency in a balanced three-phase circuit. The symmetry in such a circuit simplifies the...

Piping Networks and Pressure Losses

Source: Alexander S Rattner, Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA This experiment introduces the measurement and modeling of pressure losses in piping networks and internal flow systems. In such systems, frictional flow resistance from channel walls, fittings, and obstructions causes mechanical energy in the form of fluid pressure to be converted to heat. Engineering analyses are needed to size flow hardware to ensure...

Reducing Line Loss

In a three-phase circuit, line loss is an indicator of energy dissipated as heat due to the resistance of transmission lines. To address this, incorporating transformers into the system—a step-up transformer at the source and a step-down transformer at the load—is a strategic solution. Two three-phase transformers are introduced to improve this. With a step-up transformer at the source, the voltage is increased, thereby reducing the current in the transmission lines since power loss in...
