Metabolic Analyzer

A metabolic analyzer is a laboratory instrument that measures chemical and physiological indicators of metabolism, helping researchers assess how cells, tissues, or biological samples generate and use energy. Depending on the platform, it quantifies variables such as oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, extracellular acidification, glucose, or lactate through electrochemical, optical, or enzymatic sensors. In medicine, these measurements support studies of mitochondrial function, cellular respiration, metabolic disease, cancer biology, and responses to therapeutic compounds. By revealing changes in energy pathways under defined conditions, metabolic analyzers provide quantitative evidence for disease mechanisms, biomarker development, and treatment evaluation.

2013

Zebrafish represent a powerful vertebrate model that has been under-utilised for metabolic studies. Here we describe a rapid way to measure the in vivo metabolic profile of developing zebrafish that allows the comparison of different mitochondrial function parameters between genetically or pharmacologically manipulated embryos, thereby increasing the applicability of this organism.

Real-Time Monitoring of Energy Metabolism in Human NK Cells Using an Extracellular Flux Analyzer

2025

This video demonstrates the method to analyze energy metabolism in activated human NK cells using an extracellular flux analyzer. Different inhibitors of the electron transport chain complexes impact ATP synthesis, which is measured through the oxygen consumption rate or OCR, providing insights into cellular metabolism and bioenergetics.

Metabolic Labeling

2023

Metabolic labeling is used to probe the biochemical transformations and modifications that occur in a cell. This is accomplished by using chemical analogs that mimic the structure of natural biomolecules. Cells utilize analogs in their endogenous biochemical processes, producing compounds that are labeled. The label allows for the incorporation of detection and affinity tags, which can then be used to elucidate metabolic pathways using other biochemical analytical techniques, such as SDS-PAGE...

An Introduction to Cell Metabolism

2023

In cells, critical molecules are either built by joining together individual units like amino acids or nucleotides, or broken down into smaller components. Respectively, the reactions responsible for this are referred to as anabolic and catabolic. These reactions require or produce energy typically in the form of a “high-energy” molecule called ATP. Together, these processes make up “Cell Metabolism,” and are hallmarks of healthy, living cells.JoVE’s introduction to cell metabolism briefly...

2022

Real-time cell metabolic flux assay measures the oxygen consumption rate and extracellular acidification rate, which corresponds to mitochondrial and glycolytic adenosine triphosphate production, using pH and oxygen sensors. The manuscript explains a method to understand the energy status of osteoblasts and the characterization and interpretation of the cellular bioenergetic status.
