Muscle Weight Measurement

Muscle weight measurement is the quantitative assessment of muscle mass, an important indicator of physical development, nutritional status, disease progression, and recovery. It can involve direct weighing of isolated muscle tissue or estimating muscle mass through imaging and body-composition methods, which distinguish muscle from fat and other tissues. In medicine, these measurements help evaluate muscle wasting, treatment effects, surgical outcomes, and functional decline associated with aging or chronic illness. Consistent measurement conditions and standardized techniques improve comparisons across patients and time, supporting diagnosis, monitoring, and research on rehabilitation, metabolism, and neuromuscular disease.

Measuring Compound Muscle Action Potentials in Mouse Forelimb Muscles In Vivo

2025

This video demonstrates an in vivo technique for measuring compound muscle action potential (CMAP) in mice. It outlines the steps for setting up electrodes, stimulating forelimb neurons that innervate muscle fibers, and recording muscle responses. The technique assesses neuronal demyelination and functional neuron loss.

C. elegans Muscle Area Measurements: A Standardized Method to Quantify Striated Muscle Morphology

2023

C. elegans have two types of muscles, single sarcomere and multiple sarcomere, or striated muscles. This video describes the arrangement of the striated body wall muscles, which are responsible for a worm’s locomotion and includes a sample protocol to measure muscle morphology using image analysis software.

We have developed a device (Twister) to study the regulation of tonic muscle activity during active postural maintenance. Twister measures torsional resistance and muscular responses in standing subjects during twisting of the body axis. The device can be flexibly configured to study various aspects of tonic control across the neck, trunk, and/or hips.

Measurement of Protein Import Capacity of Skeletal Muscle Mitochondria

2022

Mitochondria are key metabolic organelles that exhibit a high level of phenotypic plasticity in skeletal muscle. The import of proteins from the cytosol is a critical pathway for organelle biogenesis, essential for the expansion of the reticulum and the maintenance of mitochondrial function. Therefore, protein import serves as a barometer of cellular health.
